We
have been asked to create a "Yahoo!
Group" for Cyber Family Cafe, so on May 3,
2004, we did just that. Our Yahoo! Group
has a lot of features including: a message
board, chat, a calendar, upload file feature, a
place to upload photos (not many however, so we
will continue to use Ofoto for that) , databases
(addresses, etc.), polls and links.
What
is a Yahoo! Group:
A
Yahoo! Group is a free service that allows us to
bring together family, friends, and associates
through a web site and email group. Our Yahoo!
Group will be an extension of our web site and
offer a convenient way to connect with others in
the group. Our group is a
privacy-protected, and spam-protected
environment.
How
do I Join?
First,
go to this web address:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberfamilycafe
Then
Click on the "Join This Group" button
on front page, if you are not signed in, you
will be asked to enter your Yahoo! ID. If you do
not have a Yahoo! ID, you can click on the link
"New to Yahoo!? Sign up now".
Next, Set your membership preferences.
When you join, you can choose a profile you'd
like to display to the group, select the email
address at which you'd like to receive group
messages, choose how you receive group messages,
and more.
Features
of our Yahoo! Group
Message
board:
We will use this as our main message board, we
will no longer be looking for one to add to our
site. You can post messages to our group
by email or from our main Yahoo!
Group web site:
Via
Email
To
send a message to other group members, create an
email and
address it to cyberfamilycafe@yahoogroups.com.
Note:
you can only post to groups you've joined, and
only from email addresses registered with Yahoo!
Groups. If you misspell the name of a group, or
attempt to send an email from an account other
than the one you joined under, your message will
not be delivered. If you receive a failure
notice, check your email addresses and try again.
Via
the Yahoo! Groups Web Site
After
you've signed in, go to the group you wish to
post to, and click Post, write your message, and
then click Send Message.
Note:
Yahoo! Groups restricts messages to 1 megabyte
in size to
prevent abuse.
Chat:
We will be eliminating our other chat feature
and using this one.
Yahoo!
Groups chat requires a personal computer running
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000 or XP*,
Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4.0 or
later) or Netscape Navigator (version 4.08 or
later). HTML chat is not currently
supported. *
If you are running Windows
XP,
you must have Java installed in order to use
Chat.
Calendar:
Since this Calendar is already incorporated into
the group, we may eventually eliminate the other
calendar. We
are still deciding that however, there are going
to be some people that do not want to join the
Yahoo! Group and therefore would not have access
to our calendar. If you have any ideas or
suggestions on the matter please feel free to
e-mail us at info@cyberfamilycafe.com.
File
Upload:
You
can upload any type of file to the Files area.
The Group supports photo and image file formats
(JPEG, GIF, BMP, etc), Microsoft Office
documents, sound files (MP3, Real Media, WAV,
AIFF, etc.), HTML files, and more. If Yahoo!
recognizes the file type you are uploading, you
will see a special icon denoting its type.
Each group has 20 megabytes server space
allocated for Files. You can upload any number
of smaller files (up to the limit of 20
megabytes) or a few larger files. Note, however,
that each individual file you upload has a 5
megabyte limit per upload. If you attempt to
upload a single file that is larger than the
space remaining, or that is larger than 5
megabytes, you will get an error.
Note:
You must observe the Yahoo! Groups Terms
of Service when uploading files and photos.
Do not post copyrighted information without the
permission of the copyright owner. Do not upload
photos into Groups that contain illegal images.
Please exercise good judgment.
How
do I upload a File?
|
- Go
to the Files area of your group.
- Browse
through the folders until you find the
location where you would like to add
the file. Click Add File.
- Type
the path name or use the Browse button
to find the file on your computer. You
must know the location of the file on
your computer in order to upload it.
- Type
in a description for the file.
- If
you are the moderator, you can select
among the auto-delivery options.
- Click
the Upload File button.

Photo
Upload: We
will mainly use Ofoto for our Albums, but if you
would like to upload an individual photo or a
small album that would be great. The size
of all our albums currently on the site already
exceeds Yahoo's maximum (and there is more to
come!).
Databases:
A
database can be an address book, recipe list,
contact list or anything we want it to be.
I have already added the address and recipe
tables. Feel free to add your addresses
and your recipes. Please note that the
Group is restricted, it is not open to the
public, only invited or approved persons will
become members.
Polls:
When a poll is created, members of the group
will receive an email notification with the
question, the possible answers, and a link to
the poll so they can cast their votes.
Anyone can create a poll, have a question? - ask
it!
How
do I create a Poll?
|
To
create a poll, go to the Polls area of
your group:
- Click
on Create New Poll.
- Type
in your poll question. Polls are
restricted to one question at a time,
with up to 25 possible choices for
answers.
- Choose
whether you want to allow single
answers or multiple answers to a
question.
- Enter
the possible answers to the question.
- Click
on the Save Changes button and an
email message announcing your poll
will be distributed to your group.
|
|
Links:
Here
you can post links to anything you want the
group to see, your personal web site, your
company web site, your favorite shopping site,
or anything at all. Please do remember
that this is a family oriented site - nothing
rude, crude or explicit will be allowed - it
will be removed immediately!
Please
enjoy our Yahoo! Group site!
